Alumni Hoops Tips Off a Classic Tradition in the New Gym
Browning’s annual Alumni Hoop Game returned this year with added significance, as alumni from the Classes of 1992-2025 took the floor for the first time in the school’s brand-new, full-size gym. The new setting delivered, and so did the action, with the Even Year Alumni edging the Odds, 84–77. Athletics Director Andrew West ’92 comes with a courtside report:
From the opening tip, the game was a high-energy, back-and-forth affair filled with shot-making and friendly trash talk—most of which faded once the heavy breathing set in. The Odd Years struck first behind Ben Berman ’93, who scored five first-quarter points and, in a notable achievement, avoided a technical foul despite offering polite recommendations to the officials. Ben also led all players, by a wide margin, in YLLs (Years of Life Lived).
Stone Abramson ’19 carried the Odds offensively, leading all scorers with 28 points, while Adam Berman ’25 added 20. After the game, Stone summed things up succinctly: “I led all scorers, so I consider that a win.”
The Even Years prevailed with balance and timely buckets. Grant Thompson ’18 led the way with 25 points, while Terrell Phelps ’11 added 23, along with a career-high two assists. Terrell also led the game in points scored while wearing knickers—an accomplishment that may never be matched.
When the final buzzer sounded, competition gave way to camaraderie as players, teachers, coaches, and a few parents stayed to enjoy pizza, wings, refreshments, and the sharing of old stories—along with a few generously remembered stat lines.
